The Bible refers to Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Some may
wonder just what it means to call Jesus "Lord." Even
more important than calling Him "Lord" is in fact
serving Christ as our personal Lord. Scripture gives us
a clear understanding of Lordship. First, Lordship means
that we understand the sovereignty of God-- Knowing Him
as the one and only Supreme. Second, Lordship means that
God has first place in our life (Matt. 6:33 "seek first
His kingdom and His righteousness"). This simply
describes that He takes the highest priority in all
matters, before ourselves, before our families, our
friends, or any other allegiance. Third, Lordship means
that we accept the responsibilities Christ gives us
along with the accountability for fulfilling those
responsibilities. This lesson is the point of the
parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. Here, Jesus
teaches that everything we have comes from God and that
he will hold us accountable for how we use it. To serve
Jesus as Lord, then, is to treat everything as His...
because it truly is. Fourth, Lordship means that we DO
God's will. Matthew could not have put it any clearer,
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter
the kingdom of heaven, but only he who DOES the will of
my Father" (7:21). Words alone are insufficient. We must
live the way He commands without exception. Fifth,
Lordship is personal obedience. Nobody can obey the Lord
for you. Nobody can claim Christianity on your behalf.
It is a personal faith. It requires personal obedience,
regardless of the personal cost.
I encourage you to make Jesus Christ more than a household
tribute. Serve him as Lord, for that is who He is!
